Carlingford packs an unusual amount into a very small place. The village sits between Slieve Foy and Carlingford Lough on the Cooley Peninsula, with a medieval core, a working harbour, a greenway, an adventure centre and ten pubs and restaurants inside a few streets of each other. Carlingford Heights is half a mile above it, so most of what follows is either a walk or a very short drive from the front door.
Slieve Foy (also written Slieve Foye) is the one most people come for — the highest peak in the Cooley Mountains, three to four hours up and back, and the top gives you Carlingford Lough, the Mourne Mountains across the water and the Irish Sea in one turn. The Táin Way is a forty-kilometre waymarked circuit of the peninsula — moderate going with more than a thousand metres of climb in it, usually walked over two days or taken a section at a time, and the Carlingford Lough Greenway runs from the village on an old railway line, which makes it the easy option with children or bikes. Carlingford Adventure Centre is the reason a lot of groups end up here: ziplining, rock climbing, kayaking, archery and team days, all bookable for a group rather than a couple, and SkyPark is the same operator’s aerial adventure park on the Dundalk Road. For families the Greenway, the playgrounds and the lough itself usually fill a weekend without anybody getting in a car. For hen weekends the village is compact enough that everything is walkable, which is the practical reason it works. For a village this size the choice is unusual — we counted thirteen places worth naming, from long-standing pubs with music to restaurants doing proper dinners, and most of them sit within a few streets of each other. Carlingford Brewing Company is worth the trip but it is at Riverstown, so it is a drive rather than a walk. Book ahead at weekends and on bank holidays; twenty people arriving unannounced is a lot for a village kitchen. Adventure Lights runs through the darker months and is the biggest thing in the calendar — an illuminated trail through the woods at SkyPark, and weekend slots go early. ⚠ The Carlingford Lough ferry, which normally crosses to Greencastle in about fifteen to twenty minutes, is not sailing at any point in 2026 — so the Mourne side is a drive round through Newry this year rather than a short hop across the water. Newry and Dundalk are both close for shopping and supplies, Belfast and Dublin are each comfortable day trips, and the whole Cooley Peninsula loop is a good afternoon on its own.
